The monthly schedule featured 6 live programmes, with a year-on-year cumulative audience increase of 16%, taking the overall year-to-date increase to 10%.

‘Frankel-y’ Outstanding October

Although October 2011 featured the same number of live programmes as October 2010, this programming was not like for like. October 2010 featured the Friday of the Cambridgeshire Meeting from Newmarket while this year we were treated to another imperious Frankel victory at the eagerly anticipated Qipco British Champions Day.

The cumulative viewership for October delivered a 6% year-on-year increase, taking the year-to-date audience increase to 9.4%.

London Named Best City For Attracting Sponsors

London has been named as the sporting destination guaranteed to provide the highest return and media profile for sponsors following a survey conducted by IFM Sports Marketing Surveys. More than half of the global industry leaders polled believe London offers the best opportunity to increase new commercial revenues.

The bid team working to bring the IAAF World Athletics Championships to London in 2017 believes that 2000 athletes, 450,000 spectators and 14,000 personnel from over 200 countries in London for nine days would mean that the economic benefit of hosting the Championships to the UK is in excess of £100 million.

There were seven live programmes in September (compared to six in 2010) which included the prestigious Doncaster St Leger Festival; Betfred Sprint Cup day from Haydock Park and the Cambridgeshire Meeting from Newmarket, which was previously scheduled for early October. Due to the additional programme, September’s cumulative average audience increased 13% on 2010. Similarly, the overall year-to-date rise is 9.65%.

Knockout Knavesmire Audiences!

August was slightly more sedate than May, June & July with 7 live programmes including York’s Ebor Festival which served up some top class racing on the Knavesmire. Despite one less live programme in August (compared to August 2010) the viewership numbers improved, mainly due to the rescheduling of the Ebor Festival from “Tuesday – Friday” to “Wednesday – Saturday” resulting in an 8% year-on-year increase, with an overall year-to-date rise of 9.4% on the 2010 equivalent.

Qipco British Champions Series continues to deliver!

July was a busy month for UK Horse Racing, with 12 live programmes on terrestrial television featuring the high profile Coral-Eclipse at Sandown, Newmarket’s July Festival, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth from Ascot, as well as Glorious Goodwood.
Unfortunately audiences in July were 2% lower year-on-year; however this figure is slightly skewed due to an additional live broadcast in July 2010. If you were to compare like for like programming, viewership numbers have in fact risen by 3%. Similarly, the overall year-to-date audiences for live terrestrial racing are up 10% on the equivalent period in 2010.

Horse Racing Hits Back in June!

June saw the Royal Family attend and support “the sport of Kings,” and the Horse Racing fraternity were all too happy to embrace their involvement. The bookmakers on the other hand may not have shared this sentiment had the Queen won the Derby for the first time with Carlton House… and how close it came!

Audiences in June were considerably higher than the same period in 2010, with a year on year increase of 55%. The high viewership in June sees the year to date audiences for live terrestrial racing increase from 0.2% in May to 12% (3.4 million viewers) in June.

SPL TV audiences increase but Russian Roulette plan rears its ugly head again

The Official Broadcasters’ Audience Research Board statistics showed that there was a year on year increase in audience numbers for the SPL coverage.

According to the report over 9.7 million fans watched live SPL games on Sky Sports and ESPN, while there was an average audience rise of 35% for the BBC Sportscene highlight’s show. However, figures do not take into account the attendances at Scottish grounds, which are down for all to see.

Anderlecht Take Top Spot

Anderlecht Football Club received the largest percentage of television coverage during the past season. An annual report analyzing the impact and share of television coverage on the 16 clubs in the Pro League 2010/11 season was conducted by the Belgian department of the agency IFM Sports Marketing Surveys.

Anderlecht leads the ranking with 10.6% share of the coverage, followed by Standard (9.6%) and Gent (8.6%), with Germinal Beerschot last with 4.3%.

Whitmarsh: BBC dropping F1 would be "sad" and "most unwise"

The McLaren team principal (and FOTA chairman) repeated what he said in Turkey last month about it being “crucial” that F1 remains on free-to-air television. Whitmarsh also said that FOTA’s independently commissioned data showed that the BBC F1 coverage was reaching a far wider demographic, as well as a larger audience, than the Sunday Times article gave it credit for.
